Fighting Online Antisemitism

From 1 to 3 September, Terraforming took part in an intensive CCOA accelerator workshop in Málaga, hosted by the Coalition to Counter Online Antisemitism and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), with strategic support from Movimiento contra la Intolerancia.

Over two and a half days, teams from Austria, Germany, Hungary, Serbia, Spain, and the UK exchanged practical insights, developed impact-evaluation frameworks, and mapped out future joint initiatives against online antisemitism.

Addressing Contemporary Antisemitism in the Western Balkans

We showcased Terraforming’s “ABC on Antisemitism” – a modular online course tailored for educators, journalists, cultural workers, and civil society actors across the region. Built upon our original handbook, the course turns 26 key topics into seven interactive modules with short lessons, scenarios, and self-reflection exercises.

What makes this course essential is its direct link to local realities. It shows how antisemitism intersects with nationalist narratives, conspiracy theories, pro-Russian and anti-EU propaganda, and Holocaust distortion. Rather than viewing antisemitism purely through a historical lens, the course tackles it as an active challenge in current media and digital spheres.

Navigating a Hostile Social Landscape

During the sessions, we highlighted the growing pressures facing civil society organizations, independent journalists, and anti-corruption advocates in Serbia. Countering hate speech becomes exponentially harder when harmful narratives are echoed or normalized by state-
aligned media and official institutions.

Following initial testing with educators from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia, and Serbia, we are refining the platform based on direct user feedback. The next phase brings interactive regional seminars:

  • Niš – 17 September
  • Belgrade – 28 September
  • Novi Sad – 2 October

Conclusion

Events like the Málaga meeting prove that international solidarity and shared knowledge are vital in overcoming local political obstacles. Our thanks go to CCOA, ISD, Movimiento contra la Intolerancia, and all partner organizations for a productive collaboration.

About the project: ABC of Antisemitism Online Course

After publishing ABC on Antisemitism, a pioneering resource that explains key concepts and misconceptions surrounding antisemitism, Terraforming—supported by the CCOA Microgrant Programme—is developing an online training course paired with a social media campaign to be implemented in Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and North Macedonia.
