Four-day seminar for teachers

TOLI Institute and Terraforming organised the annual seminar for teachers from the Republic of Serbia from 21-25. August in Novi Sad, under the title “Learning from the past – acting for the future.”

Ruth-Anne Lenga is Associate Professor (Teaching) and Programme Director at UCL’s Center for Holocaust Education. A leading figure at the Centre since its establishment in 2008, Ruth-Anne directs the educational vision and strategy, oversees program delivery, drives innovation, including the Beacon School Programme, and created its Master’s degree module offer. Ruth-Anne has over twenty-five years of experience training teachers, serving as a Lecturer at the UCL Institute of Education and as Learning Director at London’s Jewish Museum. Ruth-Anne leads the Centre’s engagement with Holocaust survivors and has played a pivotal role in national and international projects, including Belsen75, UKHMF, Core Academy Trust Echo Eternal Project, and the Centre’s work with OSCE-ODHIR/UNESCO to address antisemitism. She is a member of the UK Delegation to International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance IHRA.

The UCL Centre for Holocaust Education is part of IOE, University College London’s Faculty of Education and Society. For eight years in a row, IOE has been rated number one in the world for Education in the QS World University Rankings.

Dr. Werner Dreier, historian and educator, has extensive experience as a teacher and teacher trainer. Dr. Dreier has been director of the Austrian teacher training institute for Holocaust education Erinnern.at since its foundation in 2000. The Institute organizes teacher training courses and develops teaching materials on behalf of the Austrian Ministry of Education. Since 2001 Dr. Dreier is a member of the Austrian delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance IHRA, where he is one of the most respected members of the Education Working Group. He has led research and publication projects, including historical learning with video interviews with contemporary witnesses. Dr. Dreier has been a consultant for history textbooks for many years and has published on antisemitism and questions related to learning about National Socialism and the Holocaust. In 2021 Dr. Dreier received a prestigious Austrian National Award for his long-lasting and influential work in education about the Holocaust and other crimes committed under National Socialism.

Dr. Calin Rus has a Ph.D. in Social Psychology with a thesis on Intercultural communication from the “Al. I. Cuza” University Iasi. Since 1996 he has been a director of the Intercultural Institute in Timisoara. Dr. Rus is a renowned international expert in topics such as intercultural dialogue, conflict prevention, democracy, human rights, and minorities, particularly when it comes to educational and cultural aspects. Dr. Rus participated in the Group of Experts who developed the Council of Europe Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture. Since the initiation of the Graz Process, Dr. Rus has been a member of the Working Group on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Management of Diversity of the Stability Pact for SouthEastern Europe (SEE).

Oana Bajka is a program manager and educator of the Toli Institute and the Intercultural Institute in Timisoara with more than 15 years of professional experience. Oana’s specialty is teaching about human rights, as well as education about prejudice and discrimination. Also, Oana is in charge of Toli’s mini-grant programs.

Milan Koljanin

Dr. Milan Koljanin

historian, member of the board of the “Staro Sajmište” Memorial Center

Dr. Koljanin is one of the most eminent Serbian historians, particularly when it comes to the history of antisemitism and the Holocaust in Serbia. Dr. Koljanin has recently retired, after an impressive career as a senior associate at the Institute of Contemporary History in Belgrade. He is a member of the delegation of the Republic of Serbia to the International Alliance for Remembrance of the Holocaust IHRA, the board of the “Staro Sajmište” Memorial Center, as well as the board of Terraforming.

Marko Šuica

Dr. Šuica is a full professor at the History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade . From 2001 to 2010, he is also engaged in improving the teaching of history. He is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Observatory for History Teaching in Europe. Since 2011, he has been an expert in the History Teaching Department of the Council of Europe. Dr. Šuica participated in many international projects related to improving the quality of history teaching. He is the author of several textbooks and teaching aids, as well as the implementer of professional trainings for teachers. He is the director of the Center for Research on History Teaching and Historical Heritage – a scientific research unit of the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade.

Misko Stanisic

Miško Stanišić

Miško Stanišić, a pedagogue, is the director of Terraforming from Novi Sad. He has fifteen years of experience in improving education about the Holocaust and developing projects of international cooperation and exchange between leading world institutions and institutions from the Republic of Serbia. He is the author and co-author of several exhibitions, teaching materials, and professional development programs for teachers, archivists, librarians, and museum workers. He is the author of the internationally recognized concept of educational graphic novels Ester and the international library platform for education about the Holocaust. Miško is a member of the delegation of the Republic of Serbia to International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), where he is a member of the Working Group for Education and the Committee for the Genocide of the Roma. He is engaged in various international expert teams and advisory boards by institutions and organizations such as ODIHR, UNESCO, Council of Europe, EUROCLIO and others. Among other engagements, Miško is a member of the steering board of the European Network for Combating Antisemitism through Education ENCATE.

Nevena Bajalica

Nevena Bajalica is the co-founder and manager of the Teraforming NGO program. She graduated in general linguistics at the University of Amsterdam . She gained experience through years of work at the Dutch Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (NIOD) and the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. She is the author and co-author of several teaching materials, workshops, and exhibitions. Nevena is a member of the delegation of the Republic of Serbia to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance IHRA, where she is engaged in the working group for Museums and Memorials, as well as in the expert teams of the projects “Safeguarding the endangered Holocaust Sites” and “Open access to archival material.”

Milovan Pisarri

Dr. Pisarri is a historian, and research associate at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory , where he is the coordinator of the Shoa Lab – a laboratory for the study of the Holocaust designed as a hub of disciplinary and methodologically different approaches to Holocaust research. He is the co-founder of the Center for Holocaust Research and Education. He is the author and editor of several scientific papers and publications. Dr. Pisarri’s works on the suffering of the Roma during the Second World War, especially in the areas of the former Yugoslavia, are internationally well known. Among other engagements in the country and abroad, Dr. Pisarri is a member of the board of the “Staro Sajmište” Memorial Center.

Petar Djurdjev

Historian Petar Đurđev is the director of the Historical Archive of the city of Novi Sad. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Novi Sad. After completing his studies, he worked as a history teacher in Novi Sad high schools. As a researcher-historian, he mainly dealt with topics of the local history of Novi Sad and the Šajkaška region. He is the author of numerous scientific works, publications, and exhibitions, co-author of several books, and scripts for TV documentaries.
