PROGRAM

Topic 1

New Guidelines for the Application of the IHRA Recommendations on Teaching and Learning about the Roma Genocide

Through international workshops in Vienna, Amsterdam, and Belgrade, attended by more than 100 teachers, museum workers, and experts from 17 countries, we worked on identifying challenges in education about the Roma genocide and reflected on how educators and culture of remembrance practitioners can apply the principles and standards of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).

The result of this two-year process is the new Guide for the Application of IHRA Recommendations for Teaching and Learning about the Roma Genocide, which we are presenting to the broader professional public for the first time. The guide is available in Serbian and includes chapters specifically prepared for users in Serbia and the region.

The concept was developed by Terraforming in collaboration with partners: ERIAC Serbia, Centropa, and others.

The project was carried out with the support of the following institutions: IHRA, EVZ Foundation, and the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Serbia.

Topic 2

Inclusive Culture of Remembrance: Holocaust Education and Minority Voices for Democratic Competencies

How can we ensure that the perspectives of minority communities—primarily Roma and Jewish, but also other groups whose narratives and experiences are not represented in the majority discourse in a given context—receive well-deserved space in education and commemoration? Inclusive remembrance is one in which culture of remembrance practitioners and educators, together with local minority victim communities, actively and equally shape educational and public practices. Guided by the principle of respecting the dignity of victims and relying on verified historical materials and facts, an inclusive culture of remembrance opens space for Roma and Jewish communities to have a relevant and real impact on how their own history and heritage are presented. This approach enables work against contemporary forms of antisemitism and antigypsyism, and creates space for young people to interpret evidence, ask questions, contribute to knowledge, and take responsibility for public memory.

At the seminar, we will present practical guidelines: “Tools for Applying Principles of Inclusive Culture of Remembrance in Education and Commemoration,” developed by Terraforming in cooperation with the Swedish Holocaust Museum, the Living History Forum from Stockholm, ERIAC Serbia, and representatives of various Jewish and Roma groups and organisations from Serbia and Sweden.

Designed for use in Serbia and Sweden, and more broadly across Europe, this tool was developed with support from the Swedish Institute.

Topic 3

Handbook and New Online Course “ABC of Antisemitism”

The “ABC of Antisemitism” handbook offers everything you need to know about contemporary antisemitism in one place. It is the first resource of its kind in the Republic of Serbia, intended primarily for professionals in media, remembrance culture, and education. In addition to being available online at antisemitizam.rs and as a printed handbook, we are now offering “ABC of Antisemitism” as an online course.

The “ABC of Antisemitism” handbook was developed with support from the European Practitioners Network Against Antisemitism (EPNA), and the online course was supported by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue through the CCOA microgrant program.

Connecting Stories: Migration as a Shared European History

Connecting Stories is a free bilingual digital learning module created by Terraforming and the Arolsen Archives. Through four interactive chapters, young people in Serbia and Germany investigate interconnected histories of persecution, flight, labor migration and displacement—and consider questions of borders, belonging, assistance and individual responsibility.
