Innovation in Holocaust remembrance

Stolpersteine in the digital age

Organised by the Jewish Heritage Network in collaboration with Het Hornemann Huis.

How can new digital tools help us to commemorate the Holocaust, whilst respecting the dignity and privacy of the victims and their relatives?

Eindhoven, Netherlands | 19.06.2026

Stolpersteine is Europe’s largest decentralised Holocaust remembrance initiative. It connects families, dedicated volunteers, local communities and archives through local, meaningful acts of remembrance. But what can ever-evolving digital technology add to this — and where are the boundaries?

About the event

his program brings together the Stolpersteine community from the Benelux region with researchers, heritage professionals and innovators. Through presentations and open discussions, we will explore how digital tools such as search programmes, storytelling platforms, data spaces and artificial intelligence can support remembrance. Always with an eye for what is responsible, respectful and humane.

EMDS: Creating a Trusted Ecosystem for Holocaust Education

Miško Stanišić, Terraforming

In this session, Misko Stanisic will reflect on how the memory sector can respond to the opportunities and challenges created by digital technologies, particularly AI, in Holocaust education. As more educational content is created, discovered, and mediated through digital platforms, it is essential to develop approaches that safeguard historical accuracy, provenance, and sensitivity while embracing the new possibilities these technologies offer. Misko will discuss how the European Memory Data Space (EMDS), a sector-driven initiative, seeks to conceive of the infrastructure and collaborative frameworks needed to support responsible and effective Holocaust education in the digital age.

About the project

The European Memory Data Space (EMDS) – Blueprint project aims to develop a Blueprint for a future Data Space dedicated to the Holocaust. This European Common Data Space will enable structured data-sharing approaches and advanced technologies to enhance Holocaust remembrance. The project takes inspiration from the Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) —the largest decentralized Holocaust memorial in Europe— by creating a new virtual layer that connects personal data, documents, and stories with the memorialized individuals.

Within the EMDS project, Terraforming hosted events in Amsterdam, Belgrade and in Novi Sad.

Funded by European Union – Europe for Citizens Programme – European Remembrance (EACEA)
